Expense Ratios and Fund Fees

The Hidden Cost of Investing

Every mutual fund charges fees — but not all fees are visible at first glance. Management fees, front-end loads, back-end loads, and the Total Expense Ratio (TER) all eat into your returns over time. A difference of even 0.5% in annual fees can cost you lakhs of rupees over a 20-year investment horizon.

Pakistani AMCs charge varying fee structures, and understanding these costs is critical to maximizing your net returns. Some funds charge front-end loads (a fee when you invest), while others charge back-end loads (a fee when you redeem). The management fee, typically 1.5% to 3% per year, is deducted directly from the fund's assets — you never see it leave your account, but it reduces your NAV growth every day.

This chapter teaches you how to read the fee disclosures in fund documents, compare TERs across Pakistani AMCs, and calculate the true long-term impact of fees on your wealth.
