Gold has been one of the most reliable wealth preservation assets for Pakistanis. Over the last 25 years (2001–2026), gold prices in PKR per tola have risen from approximately Rs 5,050 to over Rs 5,00,000 — a staggering 100× return. This dramatic increase is driven by two factors: the global appreciation of gold prices in USD and the significant depreciation of the Pakistani Rupee.

For Pakistani investors, gold serves as a dual hedge — protecting against both local inflation (which has averaged 10-12% annually over two decades) and currency depreciation (PKR lost 77% of its value against USD since 2001).

How Gold Prices Are Determined in Pakistan

Pakistan's gold prices are linked to international markets. The local rate is calculated from the international gold price (in USD per troy ounce), converted to PKR using the interbank exchange rate, then adjusted per tola (1 tola = 11.664 grams). The Pakistan Sarafa Association announces daily rates based on these calculations, with premiums varying by city.
